Illinois parents will be able to skip sales tax and save a little money by purchasing school supplies before their children return to school from Friday through August 10. The tax that the state will reduce on the sale of school supplies is from 6.25% to 1.25%, which will allow parents to save up to 25%. The tax savings can be applied to clothing, backpacks or any item that qualifies and as long as it costs less than 125 dlls. Art supplies, textbooks, computers, electronics do not apply. Gov. J.B. Pritzker commented that balanced budgets have created a surplus that funds programs like this one, costing the state an estimated $50 million in tax revenue.
