Antonio Guterres, Secretary of the United Nations, explained in his opening speech for United Nations aid for Afghanistan in Geneva that the poverty rate continues to rise in Afghanistan, facing a nationwide collapse. Before the Taliban took power, the Afghans were already experiencing one of the worst crises in the world, the UN Secretary General reported. Guterres said "Today, one in three Afghans does not know where their next meal will come from. The poverty rate is skyrocketing, and basic public services are on the brink of collapse." Adding: The exodus of Afghans following the Taliban victory and the recent drought have also contributed to this perfect storm. He also alerted the attendees that Afghans could run out of food by the end of the following months, with winter approaching.
