Italy grants refugee status to «Afghan girl»



After being featured on the cover of the famous National Geographic magazine, the Afghan Girl was finally granted her refugee status by the Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi. The photograph was taken in 1984 and published a year later, 12-year-old Sharbat Gula, a Pashtun orphan, was photographed in a refugee camp on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Decades later he was found living in Pakistan, whose name was not known.

According to the Italian Prime Minister’s Office, Gula arrived in Rome 40 years later.

A statement was sent in which it said: “Responding to requests from those in civil society and in particular among non-profit organizations active in Afghanistan who, after the events of last August, received the call from Sharbat Gula to help them leave their country, the Prime Minister took care of this and organized their transfer to Italy in the broader context of the evacuation program for Afghan citizens and the government’s plan for their reception and integration «
