FACTORY ACCIDENTS

FACTORY ACCIDENTS

Factory work is one of the backbones of the Illinois economy, but it is also rife with potential hazards, from heavy machinery and hazardous chemicals to repetitive use and hearing loss, as well as more mundane injuries such as slip and falls. If you’re a factory worker who is injured on the job, you deserve compensation. Some of the causes of common factory injuries are listed below.

Heavy machinery

In an industrial setting, heavy machinery from assembly lines to forklifts are constantly in use. If machinery is poorly maintained or has not been adequately serviced, the machinery can malfunction and accidents and injuries can occur. Additionally, if workers do not receive adequate training about the machines and safety or do not receive the necessary safety equipment or personal protective equipment (PPE), injuries can occur.

Hazardous chemicals

Exposure to hazardous chemicals can result in short-term injuries or long-term disabilities or occupational diseases. If workers are not given proper safety training or equipment to safely handle toxic or otherwise dangerous substances, injuries can occur. If workers are exposed to a hazardous substance (asbestos, for example, which is a known carcinogen) in the workplace over long periods of time, they can develop serious ailments (such as cancer) that deserve compensation.

Hearing loss

Working around heavy machinery on a loud factory floor, day-in and day-out can result in hearing loss, especially if PPE such as earplugs or other hearing protection is not made available to workers.

Repetitive use

If you do the same things every day on your job, that can sometimes cause injuries and health problems. Repeating the same motion over and over again—especially heavy lifting—can wear out your back and joints. Performing small repetitive motions with your hands, such as you might do working on an assembly line, putting in a specific small part on an assembly, can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, which is eligible for workers’ compensation under Illinois law.
