Chicago recommends the use of masks indoors as it increases the risk level to «medium».

Officials from the Chicago Department of Public Health again recommend the use of masks in public spaces and indoors for prevention, due to a slight increase in Covid-19 infections.

Because Chicago is moving into the medium-risk COVID-19 category, face coverings remain optional.

Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said there was no cause for alarm, but more caution.

Chicago's change from the "low" risk category to "medium" risk from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had been expected for a few weeks as infections spread over the past month.

Both in indoor public spaces and on public transport, the use of masks is only a recommendation which the Department of Public Health emphasized, without this being a mandate.
