Chicago Food Banks Hoping to Meet Demand Over Thanksgiving

Data from the Chicago Food Depository show that the cost of food has been increasing, as well as food insecurity by 14%.

Latinos and African Americans are twice as likely to be food insecure due to the increase compared to whites.

Monica Moss from The Great Chicago Food Depository commented, “I would say the demand we are experiencing is unprecedented,” “In the more than 40-year history of the food warehouse, we have never seen numbers like we have experienced. Just last year, we gave more than the equivalent of 97 million meals to hungry and food insecure households in the Chicago area. "

The manager of the IMAN Food and Wellness Center, Jamil Wright, south of Chicago commented that making cash donations is the best option since they provide the possibility to meet the needs of all people.

Food Banks hope that by Thanksgiving, there will be an increase in this need as it is one of the most expensive holidays of the year in history.
